The Whole Cast Of Deep Impact

Deep Impact was released in 1998. It was about a comet heading on a collision course with Earth.

It featured an all star cast.

Headlining the cast was Tea Leoni, as reporter Jenny Lerner. She was at the height of her popularity back then, and she was well suited for the role. Unlike most other fictional films featuring television reporters, MSNBC allowed her to be seen as working for them, whereas the usual route would be to make up the name of the network. Robert Duvall was excellent in the role of Spurgeon Tanner, the astronaut pilot of the Messiah, the spacecraft sent to destroy the comet before it could strike Earth. He provided his usual gravitas to the role, which was complemented by Morgan Freeman as the President of the United States. Having a black man play the President was a controversial decision back then, but Mr. Freeman was unsurprisingly superb in the role, perhaps paving the way for the public to accept a real black President years later.

The film was chock full of an excellent supporting cast. Years before The Lord Of The Rings franchise would propel him to worldwide stardom, Elijah Wood is the young man who first discovers the comet as it is heading for us and Leelee Sobieski plays his girlfriend. The character of Jenny’s parents are played by veteran actors Vanessa Redgrave and Maximilian Schell. James Cromwell, well known for playing authority figures, added another to his resume, as he essayed the role of the Secretary of the Treasury. Blair Underwood, Ron Eldrad, John Favreau and Mary McCormack all played astronauts on board the Messiah. Rounding out the cast were Alexander Baluev, Laura Innes, Richard Schiff, Mike O’Malley, Charles Martin Smith, Dougray Scott, Kurtwood Smith and Denise Crosby.

The cast were all excellent and believable in this tale of epic destruction mixed with hope.
