If you’re a movie nut and you get all your movie channels from places like http://www.directstartv.com/localchannels/Cal then chances are you have seen both of these movies and scratched your head at the almost blatant similarities. For the sake of clarification, I’ll explain, briefly, what each movie is about and then we will compare them.
Deep Impact was released in 1998. It was a disaster movie about an imminent threat to Earth in the form of a comet. Humanity held lotteries to save as many civilians as they could and a team of scientists were launched into space to land on the comet and destroy it.
Armageddon came out a mere two months after Deep Impact. In Armageddon, a team of oil drilling experts are conscripted by NASA to land on a planet-destroying meteor in hopes of drilling deep enough to destroy it before it makes planet fall.
The two sound the same on paper but if you ever saw these movies you would know that they are far from the same. For starters, Deep Impact was much more plausible and contained some intelligent and challenging drama. Instead of going for the Hollywood, everyone lives happily ever after ending – Deep Impact gave us a real look at the consequences of such a disaster and that is why Deep Impact, despite similarities, is still light years ahead of Armageddon.
