Was Deep Impact Considered Science Fiction Or Drama

Tuesday Sep 27, 2011

Deep Impact was a great film, but was it science fiction or drama? Is it really that far fetched that a meteor could strike earth and kill off a large portion of civilization? While the likelihood of a meteor strike of that magnitude is not high, it is relatively believable. It is for that reason I would call it more of a drama. While the story line may come across as science fiction to many, the drama of it sticks out in my mind. Everything from the government’s response to the competition for a space in the bunker is drama to me. Even the exploration of the news reporter’s relationships with family and friends brings out the drama of the film. Science fiction films concentrate on aliens and advanced weaponry, space and time travel and genetic mutations. Deep Impact is predominantly a drama that shows the various human responses to impending doom. This film explored human emotions and reactions more than it explored the scientific realm of a meteor and it’s potential impact. The storyline dove head first into planning to save what could be saved and how those left to deal with inevitable death would handle or cope with the news and the event itself.
